Explosions at Barton Solvents - Des Moines, Iowa

October 29th, 2007 · No Comments

A section of Barton Solvents was consumed by fire today. A chemical accident is apparently to blame and although all employees were able to escape the flames, one minor injury was reported. The interstates surrounding the area of explosion were closed for several hours, but have been reopened. According to Polk County emergency officials, firefighters were still in a defensive position as of 4pm. Explosions continued to cause problems for emergency services until late in the afternoon.

Reporters and other curious people were moved back, about a half-mile away from the scene of the fire to ensure their safety. Officials were concerned that nearby flammable materials of any kind could explode without warning.

Explosions were caused by chemicals that were pumped to a storage tank above ground. This tank exploded and flew into the air, creating a massive fireball of smoke and flames.

One home and one business nearby suffered structural damage from explosions and debris.
