The preliminary investigation on another home explosion in Missouri City, Texas points to another compression coupling failure. Fortunately, Ann Smith survived the explosion in her home in January 2007. However, there are others less fortunate. In Wylie, Texas a husband and wife burned to death due to a coupling failure underneath their home. These kinds of coupling failures, where the pipes are joined with a rubber fitting, have been implicated to be the cause of other Texas explosions.
After a compression coupling failure in Minnesota, CenterPoint announced that they would replace thousands of couplings in Minnesota in order to prevent any other explosions. However, despite records reflecting numerous failures in Texas, the Texas Railroad Commission, who is in charge of investigating the old connectors, has indicated that they do not believe that these compressed couplings pose a danger in Texas. CenterPoint claims to have provided the Texas Railroad Commission with all the information regarding Ann Smith’s claim; however the Railroad Commission states that their final investigation or determination of blame is not yet complete.
Nine months after her home burnt down, her neighbors have moved back into their homes after having them rebuilt. Ann Smith’s lot is still vacant. She is hesitant to rebuild until she knows that she will be safe.
