An explosion at a sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Ga. about 7 PM Thursday night injured over 40 people, several critically. No deaths have been reported, but six people remain missing as of Friday morning. Structural damage to the building has kept firefighters from being able to enter the facility; however, the department has reported that the fires have been at least partially contained.
The cause of the explosion is not yet confirmed, but officials say sugar dust is a likely culprit. Sugar dust is classified as a combustible substance by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Imperial Sugar, the company which owns the Port Wentworth factory, announced that the factory has been closed, pending an investigation which may include agents from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board.
