Sugar Refinery Plant Explosion in Georgia Kills 6 and Injures Dozens

February 25th, 2008 · No Comments

A sugar refinery plant in Georgia was hit by an explosion on 7th of February.

At least 6 workers died and more than 60 suffered injuries in a massive explosion and fire.  The blast, described as a very loud boom, occurred around 7 p.m. hitting the Imperial Sugar in Port Wentworth.  The blast resulted in a fire that has so far burned the main building of the refinery and some other sections of the facility.

Authorities were talking with the military about bringing in Chinook helicopters to dump water on the fire.  The blaze had been extinguished in the area where the explosion occurred, but structural damage was still keeping fire fighters out.

The plant is owned by Imperial Sugar and is known in Savannah as the Dixie Crystals plant.  The origin of the explosion is unknown, but a possible cause is sugar dust.  Sugar dust is classified as a combustible material.   A spark from metal tools or a thrown cigarette butt can trigger explosions.

Several miles away across the river particularly houses in South Carolina communities were shaken by the severity of the blast.  For more information, contact the Texas Explosion Lawyers at Williams Kherkher at 1.800.220.9341.
