The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) launched a program known as Petroleum Refinery Process Safety Management National Emphasis Program in 2007 in a bid to increase emphasis on safety standards at oil and petroleum refineries, which critics claimed had been ignored.
Preliminary results released this week showed that 17 out of 81 targeted refineries had safety violations which increased the risk of injury or death to employees. A total of 146 violations were discovered by investigators, leading to a total of $896,300 in proposed fines.
Richard Fairfax, director of enforcement for OSHA, has indicated that the safety initiative may be expanded to include chemical plants in the near future.
