An explosion took place at a bio-diesel plant in Defiance, Ohio, on the afternoon of January 3, 2008. Three persons were injured in this explosion. They were taken to a local hospital. One of them was hospitalised with 3rd-degree burns; the other two have been released after treatment. As a precaution all areas surrounding the factory, up to two blocks, were evacuated.
The explosion took place because a fire broke out in the factory. It appears to be the result of human error. It is said that workers left a manhole cover off of a glycerine storage tank. A spark then ignited methanol vapors that escaped, causing one large and then a smaller secondary explosion.
The plant is run by American AG fuels. The plant produces around seven million gallons of bio-diesel a year. The plant has been closed down as a result of the fire and the resulting explosion and is unlikely to open anytime soon.
