Workers at Massachusetts Power Station Burned Alive in Explosion

March 17th, 2008 · No Comments

A water tube burst at the Salem Harbor Power station in Salem, Massachusetts, killing the three workers who were nearby. The accident took place on November 6, 2007. They were severely burnt on the head, neck, face and hands by the high pressure steam that was released by the pipe bursting.

The men who died were two operators and a mechanic who were working on the ground floor of the plant on a coal-fired generator when the boiler tube exploded twenty feet above sending high pressure steam at a temperature of 320 degrees Fahrenheit at them. They were Mark Mansfield, 41, Phillip Robinson, 56, and Matthew Indeglia, 20.

The plant’s four generators were shut down for a safety review and to assist employees with the deaths. The plant powers 740,000 homes and employs 145 people.
