A Cargill meat packing plant in Booneville, Arkansas, was destroyed on March 23 by a fire that set off a series of explosions. The fire was so strong that Arkansas emergency officials issued evacuation orders for the town of Booneville.
A hazardous materials team discovered the gauges on the ammonia tanks showed that the tanks were empty. Worries that the tanks might catch fire as debris continues to smolder made the authorities decide on an evacuation order that covers much of the eastern side of town.
There are no injuries reported so far. The fire fighters were unable to fight the blaze because of an estimated 88,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia stored at the plant.
The plant has 800 workers.
