On Sunday March 30, 2008 a fire started in a carpet-backing manufacturing plant around 3:00 pm. It started as a simple machine fire and then just became out of hand and spread over the entire building. The dust and soot that had collected on the machines caused a flash fire that lead to electrical damage that ignited the whole building. Firefighters worked through the night and into the early morning hours before the fire was finally extinguished. The material that was used in making the carpet-backing was positioned very close to the machines which is what helped to ignite everything else in the building. Sources say that the company did have a full functioning sprinkler system that met all the needed requirements. Because of the tremendous amount of heat that was being contained in the building, the roof collapsed which interfered with the sprinklers and collapsed them with the roof. The owner of the plant has yet to make a statement as to what he is going to do with the plant.
