Explosion at Scrap Metal Plant in Ohio

June 16th, 2008 · No Comments

A fire caused several small explosions on May 20 at Agmet Metals off Dunham Road in Oakwood, Ohio. A worker was injured and a warehouse heavily damaged. The company is a scrap metal and industrial waste company. The facility processes these materials.

An alarm was sounded at 11:30 a.m. for fire service help. At least eight fire departments responded to the call for help. Heavy black smoke could be seen up to 15 miles away.

The worker, whose name was not released, and who suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation was taken to Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights. Workers were using a nickel metal catalyst when a fire ignited several small explosions. The fire caused 55-gallon drums of nickel metal catalyst to explode. One of the buildings sustained heavy damage and a collapsed roof.

The fire was under control by 1:30 p.m., but fire fighters were still cooling hot spots and mopping up chemicals with sand several hours later. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
