On Thursday, 28th August, Bayer Corp Science Plant Institute, situated in KanawhaCounty, West Virginia, was rocked by an explosion. The explosion and the fire occurred at the West Carbamoylation Centre where the company makes carbarmate pesticides. The plant makes the pesticide methomyl in this unit . This section of the plant is operational only for 5 to 7 months in a year. It was just being brought on line.
There was a chemical release in the immediate area of the structure which developed into a massive fire within minutes. The fire killed one personandseriously injured another. The worker who died was Barry Withrow. Bill Oxley was injured and was admitted to the West Penn Burn Centre at Pittsburgh.State and Federal Investigators were on the scene and are looking into the cause of the explosion.
