Rubber Recycling Facility in Ohio Suffers Fire and Explosions

On Saturday, August 30, 2008 the Kent Fire Department received a call at 7:50 p.m. for a fire at Puritan Systems Inc which is a rubber recycling facility on Holiday Drive near the intersection of state Route 43 and Interstate 76 in Kent, Portage County, Ohio. 

Puritan is a rubber manufacturer. Five or six explosions from were heard from within the factory. Puritan Systems houses large tanks of nitrous oxide.  These can be highly flammable under high pressure and heat. No injuries were reported due to the explosion and fire. The Red Cross is on the scene and is establishing a command center. The fire was put out but reignited on Sunday morning.  The cause of the fire is not known and will be investigated.
