On September 11, 2008 an explosion took place at the 3V Inc chemical plant in Georgetown, SC. The explosion occurred at about 8 30 PM. It is believed that the explosions occurred when employees were mixing sulphuric acid and other chemicals. The explosion did not cause any fire to start nor were there any injuries. The plant was evacuated after the explosion. One employee was injured in an unrelated spill an hour before the explosion. The Georgetown County Hazardous Material Team helped contain the area. The plant has also seen previous explosions. A fire erupted in November involving xylene and acetone. 3V had received fines for 12 safety violations in April 2007 from OSHA and settled with the South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration in May 2007.
