Plant Explosion in Camden, AL

A rocket motor exploded and caused a fire at a weapons factory in Camden, southern Arkansas, about 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17. One worker was killed. The facility is owned by Aerojet. The company employs 500 people in the manufacture of weapons at its Highland Industrial park plant at the 1200 acre facility at Camden.

At the time of the explosion about 450 people were working in the plant. They were all evacuated safely. The employees were in the process of manufacturing rocket motors. Aerojet is a defence department contractor that makes guided missiles and space propulsion systems. An Aerojet employee was working on the motor in a bay area when the fire occurred. The fire was contained by evening and the site is secured. The company does not know what caused the explosion.
