HOUSTON, Texas -Gas-powered generators have sent at least 30 Houston residents to area emergency rooms to be treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. The victims have been using the generators since Hurricane Ike, which blew through the Gulf Coast two weeks devasting Galveston Island and parts of Houston, knocked out their power.
Memorial Hermann Hospital’s Texas Medical Center emergency room has had more than 34 cases reported since Saturday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
After Ike hit shore, more than 1.6 million people were without power. Three carbon-monoxide deaths in Southeast Texas have been linked to the hurricane.
