Residents of Visalia, California received a shock at 9:52 on Monday morning, when part of a California Dairy Inc milk processing plant suddenly exploded. The explosion quickly led to fires on the fourth and fifth floors of the building, in addition to a large hole in one side of the building. Fortunately, emergency protocol were followed nearly without a hitch: 200 employee were quickly evacuated and emergency sprinklers helped to control the fire. There has been only one reported injury: an employee who had to be treated for heat exhaustion after aiding fire fighters at the scene. He has been treated at the nearest hospital and released.
Officials are not sure what caused the explosion, but note that it began in a part of the building where milk is converted into powder. It is possible that malfunctioning machinery caused the powder to catch on fire, causing an explosion similar to flour that has been ignited.
